What do you love about North Carolina?

“Kid, you’ll move mountains.”

Dr. Seuss – from putting socks on a fox to a hat on a cat – he cherished a world full of possibility. This came especially true in the classic high school graduation gift book: “Oh The Places You’ll Go.”

During this month, we here at NCLCV have been talking about the various forms of love: how it may exist in multiple languages, how it may manifest when something we cherish faces injustice, or when we’re indulging in a social media whim.

In this final week of February, as the (hopefully) last of the ice melts into the sodden earth and we look toward the possibilities spring and sunshine have to offer, we offer a simple gesture of love from us to you: what we love about North Carolina. There is no way we could include all the scrumptious Southern staples adorning menus, the breathtaking vistas tucked off the Blue Ridge Parkway, or the mascots of your favorite North Carolina team (including whichever is the “correct” shade of blue in your eyes.)

seasons3What does our staff love about North Carolina? This:

Erika: the people, I have met such wonderful inspiring people during my 18 years of living in this state. The people I have chosen to surround myself with inspire me to be a better me.

Dan: Seasons

Leslie: the diversity, I love the grit, the community that you’ll find in pretty much any city/small town. I love that we get the best of both worlds — mountains and the coast!

Debra: The diversity in regions: mountains AND beaches

Robin: The mountains! The rivers! The farms! OK and the beer but not near as much

Aaron: I love the radical, social liberation movements throughout North Carolinian history.

woolworth2Kaji: The community I found: from house shows, potlucks, collective ceremony of appreciating one to one another, to group Valentine’s Day Pizza making parties.

Jodi: I love the majesty of the Blue Ridge Mountains…part of the oldest mountains in the world! I never really feel home until I see those curvy, purple ridges.

Rashad: I love the hospitality of the people of our great state!

Carrie: Red-tailed hawks and woodchucks in downtown Raleigh. Heading east when the trees start to thin, and you can see the horizon from the beach

redtailed_hawk2Looking at these responses makes us realize: North Carolina has A LOT going for it. It’s sometimes harder to see the positive, especially in our collective movement to protect the natural resources that allow us to live and to play in our surrounding long-leaf pines.
