Every ten years, the Constitution requires the federal government to take a census, a count of every person living in this country. Our work to protect every North Carolinian’s right to vote and to breathe clean air and drink clean water depends on an accurate count of our entire population.
You should have received a form from the Census Bureau in the mail. You can send back your filled-in form or call 844-330-2020 to complete your response. But there’s an even easier option. This year, for the first time, you can make sure you are counted online!
Why is the census so important for you and your community? Here are three great reasons from our partners at Democracy North Carolina:
- Your MONEY: North Carolina receives about $23.8 billion a year in federal funding from Census data for vital things like education, health care, transportation, and natural disaster relief. The number of people counted in your community decides how much government money comes back to where you live.
- Your POWER: The number of people counted in your community affects how voting districts are drawn, who you get to vote for, and how many people represent you. More people counted means more political power at all levels.
- Your FUTURE: Government and business leaders use the Census to make plans for your community – including whether you’ll get new grocery stores, hospitals, schools, and more.
Democracy NC’s page above includes information to help you fill out your form, and a hotline if you have any questions.
Please take this opportunity to fill out the census for your household. It only takes a few minutes to make sure the next ten years count for you and your family.
