Conservation Action: Stronger Steps to Clean Up Coal Ash

Conservation Action: Stronger Steps to Clean Up Coal Ash

Conservationists are calling on the NC Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to require faster, tougher action by Duke Energy to stop water pollution from its coal ash pits.

In January, DEQ issued a draft order to Duke to address water pollution from coal ash pits at three of its power plants (Marshall, Allen, and Cliffside), and to pay a fine for the illegal “seeps” from those pits. Conservationists agree that DEQ’s draft order is a start, but it doesn’t go far enough or fast enough to fix the problem pollution from toxic coal ash pollution.

Public comments on the draft order are due by February 14. NCLCV has created a fast way for concerned citizens to add your voice to those calling for cleanup here.
