Despite Trumps’ Efforts, Offshore Wind Power Projects Move Forward
As projected, wind power projects with all their permits in place and already under construction are moving forward despite the Trump Administration’s efforts to stop all wind energy advances. A good case in point is Dominion Energy’s major offshore wind energy project nearing completion off the coast of Virginia, near North Carolina.
“Company executives said in an earnings call that the 2.6-gigawatt Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project is on schedule to begin operating in 2026 despite a flurry of actions by the Trump administration against the wind industry. Dominion said it has installed 78 of the project’s 176 turbine foundations and completed 60 percent of the onshore infrastructure. It has also laid more than half of the deepwater export cables, and construction of a new vessel for installing turbines is 96 percent finished. The boat is expected to begin work on the project later this year.”
Opposition Keeps Quiet
Even a conservative group which initially opposed the project and continues to be skeptical of wind energy declined to join in seeking a delay or cancellation of the project at this stage. They reason that the company has already invested $6 billion in costs and cancelling or even pausing its completion now would just waste stockholder, ratepayer, and taxpayer money for nothing.
And judging from the Trump Administration’s losing record in court thus far, it’s very far from certain that it would win any court case demanding that the project be shut down at this stage. Trump is learning that there are limits to power when the states and citizens fight back.
