The Town of Wrightsville Beach is the latest to sue DuPont and Chemours for contaminating its drinking water with toxic PFAS chemicals like GenX.
The town announced last week that it has cut off use of its only mainland well, which tests have shown is polluted by GenX and other toxins. In late January, Wrightsville Beach joined the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority and Brunswick County in suing DuPont and Chemours for the pollution of their drinking water sources.
Like an expanding plume of polluted groundwater, the toxic impacts of GenX and its chemical cousins keep spreading. To make matters worse, we don’t yet know much about them, and the General Assembly continues to underfund the Department of Environmental Quality’s ability to detect and regulate the chemicals and to hold Chemours accountable. A lot of people are also upset that legislators continue dragging their feet on GenX action. We at NCLCV will continue to keep an eye on this issue.
