After a nearly three-year investigation, federal authorities are letting the Chemours Corporation off the hook for alleged violations of the Clean Water Act when they dumped the toxic “forever chemical” GenX into the Cape Fear River.
NC Policy Watch reported last week the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina notified Chemours in March it would not pursue criminal charges in the case.
Last year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notified the company of other civil violations related to its Bladen County plant and GenX. Chemours also continues to face hundreds of civil lawsuits, including several in North Carolina, for alleged damages from GenX and other similar PFAS chemicals.
