A new report released this month asserts that wood pellet mills pose a public health threat in North Carolina.

The study by the Environmental Integrity Project analyzes publicly available data on the emissions from wood pellet mills permitted in several states, including North Carolina. A lively debate has ensued between environmental and health advocates and the wood pellet industry.

Wood pellet production for biomass fuel use has come under sustained attack over its risks to sustainable forestry and impacts on climate change. Four plants currently operate in North Carolina, producing pellets primarily shipped for burning in European power plants.
