Education & Resources: Call for a Life Preserver
A new analysis of the areas threatened by sea level rise along North Carolina’s coast is alarming.
The Union of Concerned Scientists’ new report projects that in less than 12 years, 6,500 coastal homes could be flooded by normal high tides every other week. By 2060, dozens of coastal communities could be effectively uninhabitable. The report details where the threats are most severe, calling attention to the need to address the climate change which is accelerating sea level rise.
A separate report recently released by the First Street Foundation makes similarly dire projections. Citizen conservation and climate action advocates are encouraged to make note of these reports and their conclusions for use in better informing public discussion of these issues.
