Harris, Stein Polling Surges Could Help Other Environmental Champions Get Elected
Since Vice President Kamala Harris took over the top spot on the Democratic presidential ticket, the presidential contest polling in North Carolina has flipped from a six-point advantage for Donald Trump to a one-point advantage for Kamala Harris.
The Harris-Walz ticket is strongly supported by endorsing national environmental groups, including the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund (LCVAF).
Stein Surges
The change in the contest between NC Attorney General Josh Stein and climate-change-denier NC Lt. Governor Mark Robinson in their race for NC Governor is even more dramatic. The gap between the candidates has ballooned from a statistical dead heat to a double-digit lead for Stein in the latest polls.
The environmental policies of the two tickets have undergone little (if any) change. However, the political picture has shifted from one in which most down-ballot environmental champions in NC faced a major uphill climb, to one in which there’s an opportunity for individual campaigns to shine. That’s likely to be good news for the slate of candidates endorsed this year by NCLCV.
Moving Into Higher Gear
But we should not take these polling shifts as cause to relax. With more than two months left until election day, the “ground game” of volunteer work and direct voter contacts is moving into higher gear. Complacency kills campaigns, and the stakes this year are too high to allow that to happen.
Instead, we can take heart that efforts by citizen advocates have a much better chance now to make a real difference in the many close contests statewide. We encourage our supporters to educate, contribute, and volunteer from now through November 5. The future of our Earth depends on it.
