Wind Energy Milestone

Biden-Harris Administration Reaches Wind Energy Milestone

With its tenth approval of an offshore wind energy project, the Biden-Harris Administration is now halfway to its goal of reaching 30 gigawatts from offshore wind energy by 2030. Together, these ten projects when completed will provide 15 gigawatts of clean, renewable energy, enough to power 5.25 million homes

Maryland Energy Administration Director Paul Pinsky called the Biden-Harris administration’s approval last week of a wind project off Maryland “an important step forward in the effort to bring clean, renewable energy production to Maryland’s coast.” He added, “Today’s announcement underscores the careful, comprehensive and collaborative environmental analysis that has gone into these projects.”

Significant Part of Energy Future

“The approval of US Wind’s Maryland Offshore Wind Project is a big step forward for our state’s clean energy future,” said Rebecca Rehr, Maryland League of Conservation Voters (MLCV) Director of Climate Policy & Justice. “This project will help Maryland meet its climate goals while bringing real economic benefits to our communities. With the potential to power more than 700,000 homes and create thousands of good jobs, [Maryland] offshore wind is an important part of the equation to meet the growing energy demand and climate impacts we face.”

“This week is yet another clear proof point that offshore wind is a significant part of the country’s energy future,” added Bill Holland, national League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Vice President for State Policy and Advocacy.

Election Implications

These clean energy wins can continue if we choose Harris-Walz over Trump-Vance. Trump has explicitly begged fossil fuel companies for $1 billion in exchange for a reversal of clean energy policies; and they have answered the call. Additionally, he has pledged to stop all offshore wind projects “on day one.” We have made great strides in addressing the climate crisis; we can’t turn back now. Donate to the Harris-Walz campaign here to communicate the importance of acting on climate.
