Washington Watch: Tax Bill Bad for Clean Energy
The proposed “tax reform” bill announced in Congress last week would stink up national energy policy, cut off renewable energy incentives, and bail out the failing nuclear industry.
Among the changes would be elimination of the tax credit for electric vehicles, and an additional $6 billion in subsidies to the nuclear industry. The Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE) said that the proposed tax package “threatens tens of billions of dollars in clean, domestic, renewable energy development and the jobs that these industries support.”
Meanwhile, the national League of Conservation Voters (LCV) also condemned the proposed legislation for “trying to sneak in a polar payout to Alaska and Big Oil that would open up America’s most iconic wild place, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, to drilling.”
CIB does not normally track the ongoing blow-by-blow of Congressional legislative debate. Given the degree of time and attention likely to be given to the so-called “tax reform” debate over the next two months (or more), however, we wanted to call the attention of our readers to the fact that key environmental priorities are also closely involved in the bill’s details.
