In the closely watched finale of the 2022 campaign, Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA) won re-election in a case with major implications for American environmental and energy policy.
The national League of Conservation Voters (LCV) congratulated Sen. Warnock on his victory, and thanked Georgia voters for returning him to the U.S. Senate. “Thank you Georgia voters!” said LCV President Gene Karpinski. “We’re thrilled to continue working with proven climate and environmental justice champion Senator Warnock to deliver good jobs and a healthier future for Georgia families. Warnock’s victory solidifies a strong pro-environment majority in the U.S. Senate and sets up the incoming Senate to do the important work of governing – including quickly approving qualified judicial and executive branch nominees.”
In addition to Warnock’s highly positive record, LCV took note of his opponent Herschel Walker’s lack of understanding of the climate crisis and the urgency of action to address it. Walker was named one of 2022’s “Dirty Dozen” candidates for Congress, LCV’s list of the most anti-environmental candidates of the year.
LCV and affiliated organizations undertook multiple efforts to aid Warnock’s re-election. Those included an extensive field program to help turn out voters in support of Warnock, a digital ad specifically tailored to mobilize voters concerned about climate issues, and contributions raised through the GiveGreen program (which helps grassroots donors direct their contributions to pro-environment candidates). CIB published a pre-election analysis of why Warnock’s victory would be especially important for good environmental and energy policies.
