Washington Watch: Clean Water Rule Delayed Again
The Trump EPA has once again delayed the critical Clean Water Rule—to buy more time for its plan to kill it.
The Trump EPA last week announced that it was delaying by another two years the Clean Water Rule, arguably the Obama Administration’s most important action to protect critical waters and wetlands from destruction. It would add critically needed protection to the waters and wetlands that provide the drinking water for one out of three Americans. Given that the current EPA chief has already initiated a new rulemaking to gut the rule, its motivation in delaying the implementation of the existing strongly protective rule is transparent.
Environmental advocates blasted this latest attack by the Trump Administration on clean water for Americans. League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Legislative Representative Madeleine Foote said, “After a hurried review and a comment period purposefully hidden from the public during the rush of the holiday season, Scott Pruitt’s delay of the Clean Water Rule is another galling attack on the clean water our families and communities depend on. Pruitt’s actions demonstrate just how scared the Trump administration is that these commonsense safeguards would go into effect and actually disprove their bogus apocalyptic claims. The administration’s constant assault on our waterways is outrageous and we will continue to defend our right to clean, safe drinking water for all communities.”
