Conservationists: Mark Binker, Journalist
Highly regarded investigative journalist Mark Binker passed away without warning last week. Binker had established a strong reputation at the NC General Assembly for quality research, clear writing, and fair reporting, during a career that ranged from the Greensboro News & Record, through WRAL TV, to The Insider. It was a mark of the strength of his work that he was praised in the press last week not only by fellow reporters, but by policy and political rivals as different as Gov. Roy Cooper, Senate leader Phil Berger, and House Speaker Tim Moore. Binker was only 43. His work will be missed, and will serve as an example of what quality journalism can still mean to bolstering public understanding of important and complex policy debates.
