Around the State: Orange-Durham Light Rail Moves Forward

In a major step forward for green transportation in North Carolina, all the required local governmental boards have given their approval to the revised Orange-Durham light rail project. The plans, including route, finances, and projected timetable, have been sent to the Federal Transit Administration for funding assistance under its New Starts program.

If it moves forward as planned, in 2020 this will become the first new local passenger rail project to break ground in North Carolina outside Mecklenburg County. It will represent a remarkable case of public support and local persistence in the face of hostility from skeptical state legislative policy makers.
