Administrative Watch: Toxic Injustice

A log fumigating operation proposed for a predominantly minority area could bring toxic injustice to the coast.

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has paused its processing of a permit application for an operation which would emit more than 40 times the total existing statewide emissions of toxic methyl bromide. In addition to the environmental justice and broader environmental impact issues, questions have been raised about the company’s operations record in Virginia.

Very strong community opposition to the proposed log fumigating operation helped call attention to the dangers. While strong concerns have been flagged, no final decision on the permit has been made. Advocates will continue to track the issue.
