Campaign Watch: “Dirty Half Dozen”
North Carolinians will decide the fate of six proposed amendments to the state constitution in fewer than 60 days. The amendments range from a vaguely worded promise to protect “traditional” hunting and fishing methods, to deceptively worded changes to strip the governor of much of his appointment powers.
NC Policy Watch dubs them the “dirty half dozen.” Their article articulates the problems with each amendment, in order to make the case that they should all be defeated.
Nonpartisan public interest group Democracy NC also has its own review of the amendments here.
NCLCV is among the roll call of North Carolina citizen groups actively opposing this rogues’ gallery of attempted legislative power grabs. It’s important to remember that each of the proposed constitutional amendments was crafted in secrecy, and rammed through in haste with no public input on their contents. In a democracy, such fundamental legal changes which have genuine merit should be subjected to honest public scrutiny and debate. The fact that these were not speaks volumes regarding their deep flaws and partisan origins.
