Protect the environment by participating in local elections day.
Local Election Day is this Tuesday, November 7, 2023, in many small and mid-sized cities and towns across North Carolina. We at NCLCV know that voting is the most important action we can do for the environment. Don’t miss your chance to vote—many important decisions about land use, our parks and green spaces, clean water, clean air, and clean transportation are made at the local level!
Local elections at the municipal level are often low-key affairs, with only modest coverage of the candidates and what they stand for. Many voters have difficulty voting in local elections, so here we share a few resources to help you. If you’re not sure whether your city or town has an election this fall, or if so who the candidates are, you can check the NC State Board of Elections website here.
Your local newspaper, whether published daily or weekly, will usually have a searchable website with information about the local elections.
Additionally, local environmental or civic groups will often have information about the background and issue stances of candidates for local office. Run an online search for a local chapter of the League of Women Voters, for example.
One environmental group with state chapters that may screen municipal candidates is the Sierra Club. Its information on 2023 municipal endorsements in North Carolina can be searched here.
Finally, every North Carolinian deserves a thriving democracy that represents them and their communities. Government must prioritize clean air, clean water, and a healthy environment, especially for those communities first and worst impacted by environmental injustices.
