North Carolina Identified as a Swing State in 2024 Presidential Race
The 2024 presidential race is heating up in North Carolina, as both presidential campaigns make clear that they regard NC as a swing state. Both Biden and Trump have a real chance to win.
President Joe Biden made two stops in North Carolina last week. He first went to Charlotte to meet with families of law enforcement officers killed by gunfire in serving an arrest warrant on a dangerous fugitive. He then went to Wilmington for a major clean water announcement.

In Wilmington, Biden announced that millions in federal dollars from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law he championed would be coming to North Carolina to replace lead pipes used in drinking water systems. That money is part of a total of $15 billion included in that act for lead pipe replacement.
“The science is clear, lead service lines pose severe health risks, damaging the brain and kidneys, to children especially, they stunt growth and learning and cause lasting brain damage. We know we can stop it. We know how to do it,” Biden said. “Studies show communities of color have been hardest hit. We have to make things right.”
Biden (three visits this year), Vice President Kamala Harris (four visits), and Biden Cabinet members including EPA Administrator Michael Regan have been coming to North Carolina with increasing frequency as the 2024 campaign moves forward. These visits have brought meaningful actions to address environmental problems in NC and across the nation.
Why NC is Now a Swing State
One of the reasons Biden campaign strategists and independent observers have concluded that North Carolina is a winnable state this year is the developing drag on the Republican ticket of its nominee for governor, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson. Many North Carolinians see Robinson as especially extreme on issues important to independent and moderate voters in the state. These issues include reproductive health, gun violence, and the environment.
