North Carolina is under economic and environmental pressure from Duke Energy. As a monopoly utility, Duke Energy makes sure its customers don’t have a choice on who’s providing their energy – or what types of energy go on the grid. Duke is proposing the largest methane gas buildout in the U.S., causing irreparable damage to our climate and our pocketbooks. Customers looking to defend themselves from rising bills by installing solar on their own homes face numerous barriers, from predatory solar companies to impossibly low rates when they try to sell energy back to the grid.
At NCLCV, we believe customers should have a choice between affordable, renewable energy and expensive fossil fuels. Building methane gas power plants and pipelines now will lock North Carolinians into paying for expensive, volatile, and inefficient power into the 2050s. Solar, wind, and battery storage are complementary, reliable resources that are inexpensive and quick to build.
Our vision of a clean energy future lies in the power of local communities and a proactive legislative and regulatory system that embraces a fossil free future. We provide technical support for energy efficiency upgrades in low-income households and advocate for equitable clean energy policies at the state and local levels. Through partnerships with local governments, schools, and grassroots organizations, we will ensure that the benefits of clean energy reach those who have historically been left out of the energy transition.
We are continually engaged at the North Carolina Utilities Commission, the five-person panel that decides our state’s energy future. From submitting technical comments advocating for low-cost and resilient infrastructure to mobilizing the communities we serve, our goal is to use our power to expand North Carolinians’ access to clean, reliable, and affordable energy.
NCLCV works in partnership with state and local environmental, health, and consumer advocacy organizations to educate the public about increases to their electric bills, when rising prices will impact residents statewide, and how to take action.
We also work with local communities who are most impacted by the buildout of fossil fuels to oppose new coal- and gas-fired power plants statewide. From methane gas pipelines to liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage and more, we help communities learn about the potential risks and damages to their neighborhoods and environments while empowering them to take action.
