Second Large NC Wind Farm Under Construction

Governor Cooper Announced Second Large NC Wind Farm in Chowan County

Gov. Roy Cooper spoke last week at a turbine “blade-signing” celebrating construction of the Timbermill Wind project by Apex Clean Energy in Chowan County. The project will be the second to be completed in North Carolina, following the 2017 completion of the Amazon Wind project. Both are onshore wind farms located in the northeastern part of the state.

“The Timbermill Wind project will bring major economic investment to Chowan County and strengthen our onshore wind operations,” said Cooper. North Carolina is an epicenter of clean energy and we look forward to expanding wind, solar and other energy projects throughout our state along with the good jobs they bring.”

Benefits to NC and Chowan County

The Timbermill project, using more modern designs, is expected to produce almost as much power as Amazon Wind with fewer than half the turbines (just 45 turbines, compared to over 100 for Amazon). At full buildout, the design will be capable of producing 189 MW, enough energy to power 47,000 homes.

It will become Chowan County’s largest single generator of property tax revenue as soon as it opens. This is just one of many examples of the interconnection between our economy and our environment. For Instance, Toyota is building its first battery production plant in the U.S. in Liberty, NC, and will create 5,100 new jobs when it opens in 2025. It’s projects like these that make us #1 in the nation for rural clean energy jobs! Help us spread the good news by becoming a monthly donor today and following us on social media @nclcv.
