Thank You Senator Applewhite

Say “Thank You” to Senator Applewhite for Standing Up for North Carolina

Duke Energy and wealthy polluters often use their money and influence to pressure politicians into doing their bidding—raising our energy bills and putting our communities at risk. But when those same polluters and their allies tried to pressure Senator Val Applewhite, she didn’t back down.

Instead, she stood strong for clean, affordable energy and for the health of North Carolina families by voting against Senate Bill 266. Senators like Val Applewhite are fighting for our future—not just the profits of a powerful few. Your quick note of appreciation will mean a lot.

Senate Bill 266

Senate Bill 266 eliminates a key interim climate action goal, the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions from NC power plants by 70% from 2005 levels by 2030.  It also shifts massive risks in costs from Duke stockholders to hardworking North Carolinians.

This bill is a blatant giveaway to Duke Energy – forcing everyday customers to foot the bill for expensive new power plants, even if they never get built, while shielding Duke’s shareholders from any risk. It also shifts more of the cost burden from big industrial users to hardworking families and households,” said Dan Crawford, NCLCV’s director of governmental relations. “Lawmakers who support this bill are voting to bail out Duke shareholders, while locking us into higher prices and more dirty energy. Gov. Stein and North Carolina must reject this bill if we want to remain a national leader in clean energy and continue to be the #1 state in the nation for rural clean energy jobs.”
