Another Year of Record High Temperatures – Take Action on Climate

The four international agencies monitoring global climate conditions, including NASA, agree that 2025 was one of the three hottest years on record in terms of the global average temperature. The trio of 2023, 2024, and 2025 have established an alarming new escalation in the level of global heating.

The groups agree that the last 11 years have been the 11 hottest on record – and that the last three represent a major jump higher, not consistent with the gradual warming trend of the last 50 years.

“The last three years are indicative of an acceleration in the warming. They’re not consistent with the linear trend that we’ve been observing for the 50 years before that,” said Robert Rohde, chief scientist at the Berkley Earth monitoring group.

Climate scientists also agree that human emissions of greenhouse gases are causing the global heat rise. Samantha Burgess, strategic climate lead of the Copernicus service, said the overwhelming culprit is clear: the burning of coal, oil and natural gas.

North Carolina is Becoming Part of the Problem, Not the Solution

Under changes driven by the pro-polluter state legislative leadership, North Carolina is falling behind. “In 2021, the North Carolina General Assembly passed HB 951, a law requiring Duke Energy to cut their carbon emissions 70% by 2030, and reach net-zero by 2050. Five years later, lawmakers have removed the 2030 deadline and have paved the way for Duke Energy to build expensive, dirty gas plants,” says Michelle “Meech” Carter, NCLCV Clean Energy Campaigns Director. “This year’s Carbon Plan relies on gas and nuclear, pushing solar and wind to the bottom of Duke Energy’s priority list. Duke is also requesting a rate increase of 15% over the next two years, making residents pay for the expansion of data centers and artificial intelligence (AI).”

Take Action

Carter says it’s more important than ever for citizens to speak up in opposition to Duke Energy’s dirty energy plan, and instead call for putting people over corporate profits.

“On January 21st and February 18th, NCLCV will be partnering with Citizens’ Climate Lobby, CleanAIRE NC, and other advocacy organizations to break down the Carbon Plan, help you write a public comment, and answer questions about our energy future.”
