Washington Watch: Senate Permanently Renews Conservation Fund
It’s a rare major bipartisan win for the environment in Congress: The U.S. Senate has approved an overdue permanent reauthorization of the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF).
This reauthorization was included in a massive land conservation bill which finally made its way through the Senate last week, passing by a 92-8 vote. The LWCF lapsed two months ago amidst partisan wrangling over the federal budget and President Trump’s demand for border wall money. The legislation now goes back to the House, which has supported it before and is newly under more pro-environment leadership. Once approved by Congress, a presidential signature is anticipated, since the program is broadly popular with most members of both major parties.
Despite an overall low score on environmental issues, North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr was a longtime LWCF champion who was instrumental in seeing reauthorization to its conclusion.
