Pipelines and Petitions

News On Pipelines And What You Can Do About It

Last week we brought you an update on the threat from power and pipeline companies’ “pipe dreams” of greater dependence on fossil gas infrastructure. We wanted to provide you with another thorough summary update of ongoing fossil gas pipeline activity by environmental reporter Lisa Sorg at NC Newsline.

More importantly, there’s a new opportunity for citizens to fight back against this rising threat to our climate and communities from piping and burning more and more fossil gas.

“Despite the North Carolina General Assembly’s mandate to reduce carbon emissions by 70% before 2030, Duke Energy and Dominion Energy continue to dig in their heels for fossil fuels,” said Michelle “Meech” Carter, NCLCV’s Clean Energy Campaigns Director. She notes that Dominion’s proposed methane gas storage center (called the Moriah Energy Center) alone could emit 65,579 tons of greenhouse gasses each year—“equivalent to the emissions of 14,500+ gas-powered cars for one year according to the EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator.”

NCLCV’s petition to the NC Dept. of Environmental Quality (DEQ) calls on it to say “no” to the polluting Moriah Energy Center. Sign on to NCLCV’s petition here.
