Take Climate Action and Speak Out on the Carbon Plan
An important opportunity is coming soon to speak out about the necessity of rapidly reducing carbon emissions from electric power generation.
In 2021, the NC General Assembly approved on a bipartisan basis a law requiring Duke Energy to cut its climate-changing carbon emissions by 70% by 2030, and to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Duke’s initial plan as approved by the NC Utilities Commission included plans to reach both of those goals. Unfortunately, Duke’s latest proposed update to that plan omits the 2030 target of 70% reduction in carbon emissions altogether.
“In 2021, the North Carolina General Assembly passed HB 951, a law requiring Duke Energy to cut their carbon emissions 70% by 2030, and reach net-zero by 2050. Five years later, lawmakers have removed the 2030 deadline and have paved the way for Duke Energy to build expensive, dirty gas plants,” says Michelle “Meech” Carter, NCLCV Clean Energy Campaigns Director. “This year’s Carbon Plan relies on gas and nuclear, pushing solar and wind to the bottom of Duke Energy’s priority list. Duke is also requesting a rate increase of 15% over the next two years, making residents pay for the expansion of data centers and artificial intelligence (AI).”
How To Speak Out For Climate Action
Carter says it’s more important than ever for citizens to speak up in opposition to Duke Energy’s dirty energy plan, and instead call for putting people over corporate profits. That’s why it’s important for citizen advocates to participate in any one of three upcoming public hearings on Duke’s proposed updated Carbon Plan.
The three hearings are:
Mar. 16: Virtual hearing, 6:30 p.m. Register today!
Mar. 17: 7 p.m., Buncombe County Courthouse, 60 Court Plaza Asheville
Mar. 18: 7 p.m., Mecklenburg County Courthouse, 832 East Fourth Street Charlotte
