Trump Votes By Mail While Demanding Cuts to Mail-In Voting
Last week we saw a particularly glaring example of political hypocrisy. Public records show that President Donald Trump personally cast his ballot in a Florida state special election using the mail-in ballot option, even though he was personally present at his Mar-a-Lago Florida estate during the voting period.
Why is this hypocrisy? Trump continues to demand passage of a Congressional bill packaging multiple voter-suppression changes named the SAVE Act – including sweeping new restrictions on voting by mail, which he refers to as “cheating” and “corrupt as hell.”
Biggest Voting Rights Rollback in History
Restrictions on voting by mail (which statistics show is essentially fraud-free) are just part of the voter-suppressing SAVE Act, leading defenders of voting rights and the democratic process to condemn the legislation in strong terms.
“Trump has made it clear he wants to ‘take over’ our elections to ‘guarantee’ his party will win no matter what the voters decide. Now, he is trying to pressure extreme MAGA Republicans in Congress to enact the biggest federal voting rights rollback in the nation’s history” said League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Democracy Program Director, Justin Kwasa. “The SAVE America Act would block millions of American citizens from voting, force people to spend extra time and money chasing down documents just to exercise their rights, and cause chaos for underfunded local election offices. By requiring voters to provide only a passport or birth certificate to register to vote, this legislation would make voting nearly impossible for the 146 million Americans who don’t have a passport, 69 million married women whose names no longer match their birth certificates, and the millions more who can’t readily access either document.
Kwasa continues, “Free and fair elections are fundamental to our democracy. Congress must reject this sweeping anti-voter legislation in addition to any other blatant attempts by Republicans to attack our democracy and our freedom to vote.”
