States Work for Clean Energy Buildout

Despite Federal Setbacks, States Deliver Clean, Affordable, Dependable Energy

While current federal government leadership has become the drum major for dirty energy, states don’t have to sit idly by while the Trump Administration does everything possible to increase climate pollution and stymie clean energy development.  In fact, many states are already fighting back, acting now to build out clean energy in pursuit of economic, environmental, climate, and public health goals.

The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) special report titled “Driving Clean Energy Deployment” highlights recent progress state leaders have made to overcome barriers to building more affordable clean energy. See for a look at the ways these states have accelerated clean energy progress – tools that North Carolina could adopt as well.

According to the report, states are driving local clean energy deployment by:

  • Streamlining permitting by advancing statewide standards, limiting punitive restrictions, and establishing firm deadlines and processes.
  • Overcoming local bans that limit the development of new clean energy projects.
  • Driving local approvals by securing favorable ordinances and decisions.
  • Building public support through strategic education, grassroots organizing, and deep partnerships.
  • Shaping responsible projects that protect conservation priorities, ensure local benefits, and require appropriate Tribal consultation.
