Mapping Injustice

map

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s (DEQ) new environmental justice community map went live last week.

The system combines data about facilities which DEQ permits and regulates, with census, health, and other geographic and socioeconomic data. The multi-layered results provide a snapshot of how poorer neighborhoods and communities of color tend to be disproportionately impacted by pollution. Looking forward, governments and agencies can use it to make better planning decisions, and other observers can use it to plan health, education, and public outreach efforts.

The map is operational now, and provides access to a wealth of insights. Check it out here!
