Air Pollution in Communities of Color

A new study is adding to the evidence that air pollution hits urban communities of color and low income harder than white and wealthy neighborhoods.

Mobile air quality monitors in the San Francisco Bay area allowed measurements on a block-by-block basis, adding great detail to pollution analysis. As they traveled, the monitors detected pockets of higher pollution that fixed sites miss. Measurements showed that neighborhoods with higher proportions of Black, Latino, Asian, and low-income residents experienced greater air pollution than mostly white and higher-income neighborhoods, creating an environmental justice issue.

The company which conducted the study for Bay Area agencies said it will soon have the results from similar studies conducted in other regions of the country. No doubt they will be similar.
