The fight against losing the progress made toward clean energy development continues in Congress, as Trump’s Big Ugly Tax Bill slithered its way out of the House and into the Senate.
The Cost of Reversing Clean Energy Progress
Last week Senate Republicans released the Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee version of the Big Ugly Tax Bill. “This proposed bill advances wildly unpopular policies that put billionaires above the law by creating corrupt pay-to-play schemes and other sweetheart deals for oil and gas executives, repeals vehicle efficiency standards, and threatens our health by eliminating programs that reduce pollution in schools from dirty diesel trucks and buses, all while cutting funding for communities to even be able to track harmful air pollution,” said Sara Chieffo, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Vice President of Government Affairs. “Catering to fossil fuel executives’ wish list will also drive up families’ energy costs, since it would slash efficiency standards and programs that have saved people trillions of dollars on gas and electricity and eliminate tens of billions of dollars of investments in cheaper, faster clean electricity.”
Chieffo concludes, “We urge Senate Republicans to stand up to Big Polluters and oppose this bill in order to protect our health, our clean air and clean water, and families’ budgets and businesses’ bottom lines.”
The Big Ugly Tax Bill gives fossil fuel companies exactly what they want. It cuts climate protection, slashes clean air and clean energy programs, and sends more money to oil lobbyists. It threatens years of progress in clean energy, puts communities at risks, and raises costs for families.

Fight for Clean Energy!
NCLCV agrees. Fortunately, it’s not too late to tell Senator Thom Tillis, North Carolina’s vulnerable Senate member who faces a struggle to win re-election next year, that he must defeat the Big Ugly Bill and protect North Carolina’s growing clean energy economy.
