Trump Administration Rescinds Offshore Wind Energy Zones, Attacking One of the Most Affordable Energy Sources
Continuing Donald Trump’s fanatical opposition to wind energy, his Bureau of Offshore Energy Management (BOEM) rescinded all designated Wind Energy Areas on the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf (OCS).
This action removes the wind energy designation from 3.5 million acres, and effectively eliminates the Biden Administration’s schedule of wind energy leasing on the OCS. Offshore wind lease sales had been anticipated over the next five years off the coasts of Texas, Louisiana, Maine, New York, California and Oregon, as well as in the central Atlantic.
Clean Energy is Cheaper
Trump promised to improve the economy, but he continues to go back on that promise. An independent study found that wind and solar energy are 50% cheaper than energy produced by fossil fuels. Instead of investing in cleaner, cheaper energy, Trump continues to look for ways to pad the pockets of his fossil fuel donors.
“The Trump administration’s relentless obstruction of wind energy is clear evidence that they do not care about creating affordable and reliable energy for everyday Americans. Offshore wind is a readily available option to power millions of homes, create thousands of jobs for Americans, and achieve energy independence,” said Xaiver Boatright, the Sierra Club Deputy Legislative Director for Clean Energy and Electrification. “It’s time for Donald Trump and his administration to get their heads out of the sand and face the facts: renewable energy is cheaper, more resilient, and safer.”
Who is Fighting for Clean Energy?
Litigation filed by the Attorneys General of 17 states and Washington DC challenging an earlier Trump executive order – which paused approvals, permits, and loans for all onshore and offshore wind energy projects – will continue in federal court in Massachusetts.
