NC Republican Politicians Propose Redrawn Congressional Map to Serve Trump Agenda
Republican lawmakers in NC have announced yet another redrawn Congressional map to “protect President Trump’s agenda” by eliminating a competitive district currently represented by an African-American Democrat.
If approved, this would be the fifth time Republican lawmakers have redrawn maps in four years. This highly unpopular process of redrawing maps to favor one political party is known as gerrymandering and diminishes the ability of ordinary citizens to select their representatives in fair elections.
Trump first demanded the rigging of election maps in Texas, leading to a cascading battle across the country. At this time, three states have adopted/introduced new redistricting maps, while nine are considering redistricting. In his struggle to maintain control of Congress, Trump has now sunk his claws into North Carolina, and lawmakers are folding.
What’s at Stake?
NC Senate leader Phil Berger announced Mon., October 13th that he and NC House leader Destin Hall would bring lawmakers to Raleigh to protect Trump’s agenda. In their own words: “We are doing everything we can to protect President Trump’s agenda, which means safeguarding Republican control of Congress.”
These leaders are clearly prioritizing Trump’s unfettered power over the needs of the North Carolinians that they are charged by law to represent. Meanwhile, they have failed to pass a state budget, which is now over 100 days late. Instead of addressing skyrocketing costs for North Carolinians, they are helping Trump to consolidate power to sell our public lands, cut essential healthcare, and give tax write-offs to billionaires.
As our state fails to provide vital funding for healthcare, education, and public services, NC lawmakers focus on helping Trump maintain control of Congress. And as our nation faces extraordinary risks during a federal government shutdown, Trump focuses on consolidating power for himself. They’re showing us their one and only priority: holding onto power, even at the cost of everyday North Carolinians.
Who Does this Hurt?
The answer is simple: North Carolinians. Voters should pick their lawmakers, not the other way around. When politicians pick their voters it allows politicians to ignore kitchen table issues. Issues like rising electricity and medical bills, underfunded education, and rising unemployment. When politicians choose their voters, it hurts everyday, hardworking families and communities.
North Carolinians Overwhelming Oppose Gerrymandering
Recent polling shows NC voters on both sides of the aisle oppose gerrymandering:
- 94% of North Carolinians want districts that fairly represent all communities and political viewpoints;
- 84% believe: “it’s never acceptable for politicians to draw districts to help their own party win more seats;
- and 76% say gerrymandering should be illegal.
Trump and Republican lawmakers are so terrified of being held accountable at the ballot box next year that they’re going ever further into rigged maps designed to produce Republican winners wildly out of proportion to the overall percentage of votes they receive.
What Can You Do?
There are three things you can do today to make a difference:
First, contact your elected officials!
After you’ve contacted your legislators, share this article with your friends and family. By inviting others into the conversation, you help us build a larger, stronger movement.
The third way you can make a difference is by supporting us. Our work directly seeks to hold these legislators accountable for their environmental and democracy votes. We are ramping up our work for the 2026 elections, and we need your support today.
Gerrymandering Undermines Environmental Health
The most important thing we can do for the environment is vote. If power-hungry politicians diminish our vote, they diminish our power to create a healthy, equitable environment. Everything we do here at NCLCV depends on a representative democratic system. That’s why we say we need a healthy democracy to have a healthy environment; and that’s why we dedicate so much effort advocating for our democracy.
