Judicial Watch: Pipeline Opponents Appeal One Permit, Oppose Another
Opponents of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP) continue to battle regulatory approvals on multiple fronts.
More than 20 citizen groups have filed an appeal of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approval of the ACP. Opponents argue that the FERC approval was based on both procedural missteps and substantive errors.
While that appeals process begins, opponents of the pipeline also turned out to a public hearing in Northampton County in northeastern NC on the application for an air quality permit for the ACP. They argue that the pipeline would significantly increase the emission of air pollutants including formaldehyde and volatile organics, adding to the cumulative air quality impacts in a rural area already affected by other air pollution sources.
Proponents of the pipeline are seeking to push through its approvals under a pipeline-friendly administration in Washington. Opponents seek to take advantage of more skeptical state government administrations and multiple permitting requirements to resist the project.
