Campaign Watch: Environment Wins in Alabama Election
In the Alabama Senate election outcome, the headlines naturally focused on the win for basic decency in voters’ rejection of a candidate credibly accused of sexual predation against minors. The contest’s outcome was also a victory for the environment.
The national League of Conservation Voters (LCV) congratulated new Senator-elect Doug Jones on his upset win in the special election for U.S. Senator from Alabama. LCV reminded the public that other critical issues, including the future of our environment, were on the line as well.
“Jones has spent his entire career fighting for communities, and he will bring that same spirit to the Senate where he will protect our air, water and lands,” said LCV Senior Vice President Tiernan Sittenfeld. “We need more independent leaders like Jones, and his victory tonight demonstrates that voters are tired of offensive rhetoric, despicable behavior, extremist ideas, and disregard for our environment and public health.”
“The people of Alabama have chosen a senator who will stand up for our shared conservation values,” said Conservation Alabama Executive Director Tammy Herrington. “We look forward to working with Doug Jones to protect our state’s lands and water and the people and communities that rely on them.”
LCV contributed $250,000 to an independent expenditure campaign to help elect Jones, and the GiveGreen project of the LCV Action Fund raised or contributed over $50,000 to Jones’ campaign.
