Executive Watch: Cooper Gets an Early Start
Newly elected Governor Roy Cooper chose to set his official swearing-in to his new office at the earliest time constitutionally possible, just one minute past midnight on January 1. The move cut off as soon as possible the window for further late-breaking maneuvers by the outgoing governor (or possibly even the lieutenant governor) to make appointments, orders, and other decisions before the change of administrations.
For all the challenges and problems still facing conservationists in 2017, CIB still slept somewhat more soundly last night knowing that the most anti-environmental governor in modern North Carolina history had already been replaced by an environmental champion elected with the strong support of our state’s citizen environmental movement.
