Washington Watch: Tax Bill Threatens Environment, Clean Energy

NCLCV last week encouraged its supporters to contact Senators in opposition to the major tax bill under consideration by the U.S. Senate. Among other problems, the bill includes provisions that would open the highly sensitive Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas development.

In addition, tax code provisions in the Senate’s version would jeopardize continued wind and solar energy development. While the effect of the Senate version’s provisions on wind and solar energy may be inadvertent, renewable energy advocates are concerned that there had been no move to fix the problem once it was identified.

On the House side, its approved version deliberately cut back solar and wind energy tax credits. Either main version of the legislation under consideration now would therefore be bad news for clean energy.
