The Cost We Carry

What’s Your Story?

The cost of living is skyrocketing. Ever increasing grocery prices, health care premiums, and electric bills. We want to hear from you about your budget over the last year. How has it changed and why? What are you spending more on, what are you putting off purchasing, and how are you adjusting to the current job market?

More About This Project

This project brings together folks across our state to speak out on the out of control cost of living and what this means for them and their families. Stories submitted will be compiled into one storybook, categorized based on the themes/topics they cover (such as medical bills, unemployment, energy bills, etc.). The storybook will be released to the public in early to mid-December in tandem with a press conference highlighting the need for NC lawmakers and leaders to provide relief.

NCLCV is conducting this project in partnership with the Coalition Against Right-wing Extremism (CARE), a coalition of organizations fighting for everyday, hard-working North Carolinians. The coalition members work on issues such as social justice, healthcare, public education, and more.

What is Shared with the Public?

If you choose to participate, your story, name, and zip code will be shared with the public. But  we will not share any other information you provide with the public. If you have questions or concerns, please contact our Director of Communications.

Participants can opt-out at any time before the public release of the storybook.

Why Are We Working on Cost of Living?

North Carolinians face major increases to their energy bills – increases that can be tied directly to legislation from the NC General Assembly and Trump’s budget bill. These policies roll back incentives for solar and wind, which are some of the cheapest (and most sustainable) energy sources to date, while incentivizing gas and coal, which is expensive and has been driving rate increases. So while we move North Carolina toward sustainable energy, we can also advocate for more affordable energy. We’re also concerned about increases in home insurance due to increases in extreme weather, while the Trump administration cuts FEMA funds.
