Federal Judge Strikes Down Trump’s Wind, Solar Blockade
A federal District Court judge last week halted a set of energy actions by the Trump Administration which have effectively blockaded the development of new wind and solar projects needing federal approvals.
Chief U.S. District Judge Denise Casper in Boston sided with nine clean energy organizations that sued to stop the federal government’s “arbitrary and capricious” efforts to hinder wind and solar development on public land or wherever federal permits are required, and issued a preliminary injunction barring use of five challenged administrative actions while the case moves forward in court.
Lowest Cost, Fastest To Build
In a joint statement, the plaintiffs said, “Clean energy is fast, affordable and here to stay. We look forward to getting back to work and restarting the impacted wind and solar projects nationwide.” The plaintiffs in the case are the Alliance for Clean Energy New York, MAREC Action, Southern Renewable Energy Association, Clean Grid Alliance, Interwest Energy Alliance, Renewable Northwest, Carolinas Clean Energy Business Association, RENEW Northeast and Green Energy Consumers Alliance.
“The Trump administration keeps trying new ways to block the clean energy projects needed to power the grid, and the courts keep striking them down. The administration should take the hint and stop these illegal attacks on projects that will help meet surging electricity demand and bring down costs for consumers,” said Kit Kennedy, managing director for power at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). “Consumers are paying higher prices, workers are losing jobs, the air and water are more polluted, and the renewable energy industry is having to fend off these attacks when it should be building at full speed. Instead of trying to prop up the dirty and uneconomic fuels of the Victorian era, this administration should let the market work. Wind, solar and batteries are the lowest cost and fastest-to-build energy sources. It’s time for the White House to get out of their way.”
