NCLCV Releases Statement on Supreme Court Decision to Gut Voting Rights Act
RALEIGH, N.C.— Today, the North Carolina League of Conservation Voters (NCLCV) released the following statement from Executive Director Carrie Clark:
“We are deeply disappointed by the decision in Louisiana v. Callais, a ruling that strikes at the very heart of our democracy. By effectively gutting Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, this verdict represents a devastating rollback of fundamental freedoms that generations of Americans have fought to secure and protect.
“Section 2 has long served as one of the most critical tools for challenging racial discrimination in voting. Weakening its power not only undermines the progress made since the civil rights movement, but also opens the door to a future where discriminatory practices can persist unchecked. This decision risks silencing the voices of communities of color and eroding fair representation in our political system.
“The dangers of this ruling extend far beyond a single case. It sets a precedent that could embolden efforts to dilute voting power, redraw maps in ways that disenfranchise voters, and weaken protections that ensure equal access to the ballot. At a time when our democracy should be expanding participation, this decision moves us in the opposite direction – toward exclusion and inequity.
“We cannot separate environmental justice from racial justice, and we cannot have either without fair and transparent representation. Communities most impacted by environmental harm are often the same communities whose political voices are now at greater risk. This is why we remain steadfast in our commitment to fight not only for clean air, clean water, and a healthy environment, but also for a just and inclusive democracy where every voice is heard.
“We will continue to stand alongside our partners and communities to defend voting rights, advance racial equity, and ensure that our democratic systems work for everyone. The work ahead is urgent, and we are committed to meeting this moment with determination and resolve.”
