Administrative Watch: DEQ Proposes Cap on Air Toxin

Spurred by public resistance to a log fumigation facility permit request, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is now proposing its first cap on the toxic air pollutant methyl bromide.

Why would they do that? After all, isn’t the company applying for a permit to use this deadly chemical in great quantities proposing the most “modern” technology to control leaks, like sandbags and duct tape? Perhaps we should think about this further.

DEQ is proposing a temporary standard to strictly control these emissions that is based on the best study data available. The state Environmental Management Commission will consider the proposal next month.
