Executive Watch: Cooper Commits to Fighting Climate Change

Last week, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper took the bold step of formally committing to a 40% reduction in the state’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2025, relative to 2005 levels.

“A strong clean energy economy combats climate change while creating good jobs and a healthy environment,” said Cooper. “With historic storms lashing our state, we must combat climate change, make our state more resilient and lessen the impact of future natural disasters.”

Cooper’s Executive Order 80 calls for the protection of North Carolina’s environment and the extended development and mobilization of clean energy technologies.

NCLCV and other citizen conservation organizations praised Cooper’s action. “With his commitment to a 40% reduction of North Carolina’s greenhouse gas emissions over the next seven years, Gov. Roy Cooper continues to prove why he earned an ‘A’ in our latest scorecard for his environmental leadership over the last two years,” said NCLCV Director of Governmental Relations Dan Crawford. “Gov. Cooper has used his authority to strengthen public health protections and our vibrant clean energy economy which benefit all North Carolinians.”

NCLCV encourages conservationists to send Gov. Cooper a note of appreciation, reinforcing the strength of public support for clean energy and climate action steps.
