Around the State: Kill Devil Hills Seeks Continued Bag Ban

The elected board of one Outer Banks town is asking its merchants to continue to ban plastic bag usage in their stores there.

Kill Devil Hill’s town Board of Commissioners agreed to send a letter to local retailers, asking that they continue the ban in their stores despite the state legislature’s recent repeal of local authority to require it. At least one local retail outlet in Kill Devil Hills (Walgreen’s) requested the action, while at least one other local retailer (Harris Teeter) has already resumed using plastic bags as its default option.

The town board’s action came following a public hearing on ways to maintain the ban. There has been broad local condemnation of the legislature’s repeal of the bag ban, including by other Outer Banks retailers and local officials. (Item based on report in the Outer Banks Sentinel.)
