HotList 05/30/2013

Dear Friends,

As the budget process continues in the legislature, we took the time last night to honor a number of dedicated public servants who strive to protect North Carolina’s environment at our seventh annual Green Tie Awards dinner. Our keynote speaker, John Campbell from WasteZero, spoke on the need to limit the production of solid waste and described his company’s innovative solution to this problem. Apart from our award winners, which are listed below, the event commended Representative Tom Murry and past rising star award winner Representative Ruth Samuelson for their continued hard work in defending the environment in North Carolina’s General Assembly, especially their actions in stopping the push to repeal The Renewable Portfolio Standard. We thank them, the award winners, and all those in the legislature and community who recognize the need for a strong conservation movement.

  • 2013 Defender of the Environment – Representative Deborah Ross – Awarded for her consistent willingness to defend against bad environmental legislation, the pollution lobby, and her commitment to taking a strong stand to defend our communities against environmental degradation.
  • 2013 Senator of the Year – Senator Dan Blue – Awarded for his consistent ability to prioritize protecting our environment when making hard decisions, his long-time and effective willingness to engage with the environmental community, and providing real leadership over the years on key issues at the intersection of environment and social justice.
  • 2013 Representative of the Year – Representative Susan Fisher – Awarded for her sponsorship and votes for sound environmental legislation, being proactive on environmental issues, and her notable environmental record.
  • 2013 Catalyst Award – Sue Sturgis, The Institute for Southern Studies – Awarded for her long history and strong commitment to educating the public about important environmental issues through media coverage bringing attention to actions threatening North Carolina’s environment and quality of life.

Legislation we are keeping an eye on are listed below. Please feel free to contact us with any questions atmichael@nclcv.org and logan@nclcv.org, or you can contact Dan at dan@nclcv.org.

Best,
Michael and Logan | michael@nclcv.org, logan@nclcv.org
